Mean Blood Pressure, Prevalence and Epidemiologic Characteristics of Hypertension among Representative Korean Adult Population

Abstract
This blood pressure study was performed in 1990 on 22,163 subjects older than 30 years of age, selected through cluster sampling in 190 of 154,082 enumeration districts. Even though this data had been published(in English) in 1994 we analysed the same data utilizing new set of blood pressure classification, JNC VI reported.
Distribution of blood pressure and prevalence of hypertension among adult Koreans in accordance with the JNC VI classification were as followings:
1. The proportion of normal blood pressure was 58% for male and 63% for female, which gradually decreased as age advanced.
2. The high normal blood pressure, however, revealed consistency in its proportion for all age groups suggesting that this range of blood pressure is a buffer zone.
3. The mean blood pressure and prevalence of hypertension varide widely by the study area. Age adjusted(1990 Korean population) prevalence rate was 21% for male and 20% for female; 8.7% for 30s of age, 17.8% for 40s 27.0% for 50s 37.0% for 60s, 45.4% for 70s and 48.1% for age group older than 80 years.
4. The most hypertensives belonged to stage 1(M:83%, F:78%)and a smaller proportion to stage 2(M:14%, F:18%), and the smallest proportion to stage 3(m:3.9%, F:5.4)%. Females appeared to have larger proportion of severe hypertension than males.
5. The proportion of the hypertensives being aware of hypertension was 27% and the people getting continuous treatment among those being aware of hypertension was 28%.
6. The risk factors identified by multiple logistic regression analysis were age, family history of hypertension, alcohol drinking and BMI.
